Astanka Yoga Mandir

India is a land rich in myths, legends and folklore centred on revered deities, valiant heroes and fierce demons --- all inseparable from its religious and ritual celebration, its art and literature. They exist and come to life in its villages, travel through small towns and reach the vast urban centres. This journey speaks of an awe-inspiring legacy of tradition, vivacity and synthesis. The arts thus became innate to life --- as spontaneous expressions of joy, for propitiating the gods in difficult times, in accompaniment to rites and rituals punctuating the passage of life. Each of India’s myriad art forms was born and nurtured in its local context. Each, however, has its own story to tell of how it travelled down the ages, always seeking to dialogue with cultures beyond its own.

India’s performing and fine arts, its literature and architecture, whether tribal, folk or classical, evolved either as subtle representations of a greater quest, through a great desire to absorb and integrate talents and expressions outside its own realm, or as popular forms of entertainment. Naturally, transformations have emerged in their rendition and depiction. Their inherent openness has enriched them, kept them alive. While tradition has allowed the precision and purity of the classical arts to flourish, it has also encouraged an interaction among different art forms thus crafting novel idioms.
